Inside the Selkirk Lab: How engineers optimize paddle surfaces using a profilometer


The information provided in this article was gathered during a brief discussion with one of Selkirk's engineers during their break from the lab.

At Selkirk LABS, precision is at the forefront of pickleball paddle development.
A pivotal instrument in the LABS research and quality assurance processes is the Keyence Dual Objective Lens Profilometer.

This advanced non-contact 3D measurement system plays a crucial role in analyzing and refining the surface characteristics of Selkirk's pickleball paddles, ensuring optimal performance for players.

Understanding surface roughness and its impact on paddle performance

The surface texture of a pickleball paddle significantly influences ball control, spin generation, and overall playability.

That's why certain materials, like raw carbon fiber, can impart more spin on a pickleball when compared to a material like wood. 

However, microscopic variations — such as peaks and valleys on the paddle's surface — in materials can also affect how the ball interacts upon contact.

Therefore, accurately measuring and mapping these surface features is essential for selecting reliable materials and designing paddles that meet both performance standards and regulatory requirements.

The role of the Keyence Dual Objective Lens Profilometer in surface analysis

The Keyence Dual Objective Lens Profilometer is engineered to capture detailed 3D surface profiles, roughness, and topography data with exceptional precision.

The machine projects structured light onto a paddle's surface. The reflected light, altered by the paddle's surface topography, is then detected and analyzed to construct a high-resolution 3D map of the paddle's surface features. 

This method enables measurements with a resolution of 0.1 micrometers (µm), allowing for the detection of minute surface details that would otherwise be imperceptible. 

Advantages of non-contact measurement

Unlike stylus profilometers, which physically contact the surface and may risk altering delicate textures, the Keyence system's non-contact approach preserves the integrity of the paddle during analysis.

This ensures that the measurements reflect the true surface characteristics, leading to more accurate assessments and informed decisions in the development process.

Application in developing Selkirk's InfiniGrit coating

The profilometer has been instrumental in the engineering and refinement of Selkirk's proprietary InfiniGrit coating.

By providing precise 3D surface topography maps, LABS engineers can magnify surface textures to an extreme degree, exposing microscopic details of a paddle before use and at each stage until it reaches failure.

This capability allowed for fine-tuning both the texture and application process of the InfiniGrit coating, resulting in paddles that offer consistent playability, enhanced spin, and a long-lasting surface texture.

Monitoring durability and performance over time

Beyond initial development, the profilometer is utilized to monitor how paddle surfaces evolve with use.

For instance, after subjecting paddles to durability tests, such as impact simulations, the profilometer assesses any changes in surface roughness. This data is crucial for understanding wear patterns and ensuring that Selkirk paddles maintain their performance characteristics throughout their lifespan.

Surface roughness testing in professional pickleball

In professional pickleball tournaments, paddle compliance with surface roughness standards is critical to ensure fair play.

Regulatory bodies, such as USA Pickleball, have established specific limits on surface roughness to prevent players from gaining undue advantages through equipment modifications. For example, the allowable roughness limit is set at no greater than 40 micrometers on average, ensuring the paddle surface does not overly influence the ball's spin and speed.
